Today we are surrounded by many processed food options that line the shelves of our grocery stores. These foods are often cheaper, more convenient, and attractive to those with limited time and cooking skills. Generally, the average American knows that eating fresh, whole foods is better than eating processed foods, yet they continue to rely on them without really thinking about the risks.
A new study published in Cell Metabolism compared people eating an ultra-processed diet versus an unprocessed diet for two weeks. The researchers found that those on the ultra-processed diet consumed more calories and gained weight while those on the unprocessed diet lost weight. So basically, those who ate ultra-processed foods had significant unintentional weight gain!
A recent NYTimes article titled, Why Eating Processed Foods Might Make You Fat, further substantiates these findings and provides detailed descriptions of both the ultra-processed and the unprocessed meals consumed in the study.
The overwhelming conclusion here is that all foods are not created equal. While there are many diet plans and thousands of diet books for sale, almost all of them agree that real, whole food is always the best choice. If you want to stay healthy, lose or maintain weight, and prevent chronic diseases then the message is clear: consume foods derived from nature and not from a box!
